Riyadh Travel Guide

Saudi Arabia's capital has changed fast since the country opened to leisure tourism. Riyadh is a sprawling desert metropolis of glass towers and wide highways, but it also holds the mud-brick birthplace of the Saudi state, dramatic escarpments on its edge and a growing calendar of concerts, sport and festivals. It suits travellers curious about a place few people have seen as tourists, and business visitors with a spare day or two.

Quick Facts

Seasons

Riyadh has a hot desert climate. November to February is the most pleasant period, with warm days and cool, sometimes chilly nights; this is when the city hosts much of its Riyadh Season entertainment programme. March, April and October are warm but workable. May to September is extremely hot and dry, so outdoor sightseeing is limited to early mornings and late evenings. Ramadan dates shift each year; during the month, restaurants open around sunset and the city comes alive late into the night.

The Highlights

Historic Riyadh

Diriyah, on the north-western edge of the city, is where the first Saudi state was founded. Its At-Turaif district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a restored complex of mud-brick palaces and walls. Next door, the Bujairi Terrace has restaurants and cafés overlooking the old town and the Wadi Hanifah valley.

In the centre, Masmak Fortress is a squat clay fort central to the story of the founding of modern Saudi Arabia. The surrounding Deira and Al Thumairi area has traditional souks selling dates, perfume, oud, carpets and antiques.

Museums

The National Museum of Saudi Arabia in the King Abdulaziz Historical Centre walks through the Arabian Peninsula's history from prehistoric times to the present, and the nearby Murabba Palace shows how the royal court once lived.

Modern Skyline

The Kingdom Centre tower's Sky Bridge and the observation area of Al Faisaliah Tower give wide views over the city. Boulevard City and Boulevard World are large entertainment zones, especially busy during Riyadh Season.

Out of Town

The Edge of the World (Jebel Fihrayn) is a sheer escarpment of the Tuwaiq mountains with views over an ancient seabed plain. The road includes rough tracks, so most visitors go with a tour operator and a 4x4. The red sands of the Red Sand dunes are popular for quad biking and sunset camps.

Food and Coffee

Start with kabsa, the national dish of spiced rice with chicken or lamb, and jareesh (cracked wheat). Try mutabbaq (stuffed pancake) at street stalls and fresh dates with lightly spiced Saudi coffee. Riyadh has a booming speciality coffee culture, with independent cafés in districts such as Al Olaya and around the Boulevard. Large Indian, Pakistani, Filipino and Levantine communities mean excellent and inexpensive international food. Alcohol is not sold.

Getting There and Getting Around

King Khalid International Airport (RUH) has flights from across the Middle East, Europe, Asia and Africa, operated by Saudia, flynas and many foreign carriers. Taxis and ride-hailing apps (Uber, Careem) connect the airport with the city.

Riyadh is enormous and designed for cars. Ride-hailing apps are the easiest way to get around. The Riyadh Metro has been opening in stages, and the bus network is expanding; check the official Riyadh public transport app for what is running during your trip. Walking between districts is rarely practical, though the Diriyah and Boulevard areas are pleasant on foot in the evening.

Budget Tips

Etiquette

Dress conservatively: shoulders and knees covered for everyone. Women are not required to wear an abaya, but loose, modest clothing is respected. Ask before photographing people, avoid photographing government buildings, and keep voices low near mosques during prayer times, when some shops may briefly close.
