Abu Dhabi Travel Guide

Why Go

Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates and a calmer, more spacious counterpart to Dubai, about ninety minutes up the coast. The city is spread across a main island and a cluster of smaller ones, linked by bridges and causeways. It mixes grand cultural landmarks with long corniche walks, mangrove lagoons, desert dunes and a cultural district that is still growing on Saadiyat Island. Visitors tend to find it less hectic than its neighbour, with a strong focus on heritage, art and family attractions.

When to Visit

The cooler months from roughly November to March are the most comfortable, with warm sunny days and pleasant evenings that suit beach time, desert trips and outdoor dining. This is also peak season, so hotels fill up around winter holidays and major events. April, May and October are shoulder months: hot, but manageable if you plan outdoor sightseeing for early morning and evening. June to September brings intense heat and humidity; many travellers stay indoors at malls, museums and theme parks, and hotels often cut their rates. During Ramadan, which moves each year with the Islamic calendar, daytime eating and drinking in public are expected to be discreet, and opening times can change, but evenings have a special atmosphere.

What to See

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the city's defining sight, a vast white marble mosque with intricate floral inlays, chandeliers and reflecting pools. It welcomes visitors of all faiths outside prayer times; modest dress is required, and women are asked to cover their hair. Check the official website for current visiting rules and to register in advance.

Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island sits beneath a huge latticed dome that scatters "rain of light" across the galleries. Its collection traces shared human stories across civilisations rather than by region.

Qasr Al Watan is a working presidential palace that opens part of its grand halls, library and exhibitions to the public. Nearby, Qasr Al Hosn, the oldest stone building in the city, tells the story of Abu Dhabi before oil.

Yas Island is the entertainment hub, home to Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, Yas Waterworld, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi and the Yas Marina Formula 1 circuit. It is ideal for families or anyone who enjoys rides.

The Corniche offers kilometres of seafront promenade, cycle paths and public beaches, best enjoyed around sunset. For nature, kayak or paddleboard through the Eastern Mangroves or the mangroves of Jubail Island to spot herons and crabs.

A desert safari into the dunes, often including dune driving, sandboarding and a camp dinner, is a popular half-day trip. Further afield, the Liwa Oasis and the towering dunes of the Empty Quarter reward an overnight stay, and the garden city of Al Ain, a UNESCO-listed site with ancient oases, makes a good day trip.

Eating Well

Emirati cuisine is worth seeking out: try machboos (spiced rice with meat or fish), harees (slow-cooked wheat and meat), luqaimat (sweet dumplings with date syrup) and fresh dates with Arabic coffee. The city's large South Asian and Arab communities mean excellent Indian, Pakistani, Lebanese and Syrian food at every budget, from shawarma counters to grand hotel buffets. The Mina Port area has fish and date markets, and Friday brunches in hotels are a local institution. Alcohol is served in licensed hotels and restaurants only.

Arriving and Moving Around

Zayed International Airport (AUH) is the main gateway and the hub of Etihad Airways, with direct flights to many cities in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Some travellers also fly into Dubai and transfer by road, which takes around an hour and a half. From the airport, taxis and ride-hailing apps are the simplest way into the city, and public buses also run.

Abu Dhabi is built around the car. Metered taxis are plentiful and generally affordable, and apps such as Uber and Careem operate. The public bus network covers the main areas and is paid with a Hafilat card. Walking is pleasant along the Corniche in cooler months but distances between districts are large. Renting a car makes sense for Al Ain or Liwa.
