Few cities sit in such a spectacular setting. Vancouver is wrapped by ocean inlets and backed by the snow-capped North Shore Mountains, so you can kayak in the morning, walk through rainforest at lunchtime and, in winter, ski in the evening. Canada's third-largest metropolitan area is also one of its most diverse, with large Chinese, South Asian, Filipino and Indigenous communities shaping its culture and food. The city stands on the traditional territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.
July and August are the driest and sunniest months, perfect for beaches, hiking and patio dining, and also the busiest and most expensive, with cruise-ship traffic to Alaska. June and September offer a good balance. Autumn and winter are mild but rainy; this is when locals head to the mountains, as Grouse, Cypress and Seymour offer skiing close to the city, and Whistler is a couple of hours away. Spring brings cherry blossoms along many residential streets.
One of North America's great urban parks, almost surrounded by water. Walk or cycle the Seawall around its edge, see the totem poles at Brockton Point, and visit the Vancouver Aquarium. Bike rentals are available near the park entrance on Denman Street.
A former industrial area turned into a lively hub of artists' studios, theatres and the Granville Island Public Market, packed with fresh produce, baked goods and smoked salmon. Little ferries cross False Creek to reach it.
Vancouver's oldest neighbourhood has cobbled streets, Victorian buildings and the famous steam clock. Nearby, Chinatown is home to the Dr Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, a Ming-style garden built using traditional techniques.
Cross the Capilano Suspension Bridge high over a canyon, with treetop walkways and a cliff walk, or visit the free Lynn Canyon Park suspension bridge. Ride the Grouse Mountain Skyride for city views; the steep Grouse Grind trail is a local fitness ritual in summer.
The Museum of Anthropology at UBC holds outstanding Northwest Coast Indigenous art in a striking building. The Bill Reid Gallery focuses on contemporary Indigenous art, and the Vancouver Art Gallery has rotating exhibitions.
English Bay, Kitsilano and Spanish Banks are popular beaches. Explore Main Street for independent shops, Commercial Drive for cafés, and Yaletown for restaurants in converted warehouses.
The Sea-to-Sky Highway runs past fjords and waterfalls to Squamish (with the Sea to Sky Gondola) and Whistler. Ferries cross to Victoria on Vancouver Island, the province's capital. Whale-watching tours leave from Vancouver and nearby Steveston in season.
Vancouver is known for Pacific salmon, spot prawns in late spring and outstanding sushi at every budget; the California roll is often credited to a Vancouver chef. Richmond, just south of the city, has some of the best Chinese food outside Asia, with a summer night market. The Punjabi Market on Main Street and the city of Surrey are centres of South Asian food and culture. Try a Nanaimo bar, a no-bake Canadian dessert, and Japadog, a local hot dog with Japanese toppings.
Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is a major Pacific gateway with flights to Asia, Europe, the US and across Canada. The Canada Line SkyTrain links the airport with downtown in under half an hour. VIA Rail and Amtrak trains arrive at Pacific Central Station, and BC Ferries serve Vancouver Island.
TransLink runs the SkyTrain, buses and the SeaBus ferry to North Vancouver; pay with a Compass Card or contactless card. Cycling is popular, with extensive bike lanes and a bike-share scheme. Downtown is very walkable.
