Los Angeles Travel Guide

Why Go

Los Angeles is less a single city than a sprawling collection of neighbourhoods tied together by freeways, beaches and mountains. Hollywood glamour is only one layer. There is the surf culture of Venice and Santa Monica, the art museums of the Westside, the taco trucks of East LA, the Korean barbecue of Koreatown and the hiking trails that climb straight out of the city into the Santa Monica Mountains. The key to enjoying LA is to pick a few areas, plan around traffic and accept that you will not see it all in one trip.

When to Visit

Southern California has a mild, dry climate, so there is no truly bad month.

What to See and Do

Griffith Observatory and Griffith Park. The observatory is one of the best places to see the Hollywood Sign and the city grid at sunset. The surrounding park has miles of trails.

Hollywood. The Walk of Fame and the TCL Chinese Theatre are touristy but iconic. For real film history, a studio tour at one of the working lots in Burbank or Culver City is more rewarding.

The Getty Center. A hilltop museum known for its architecture, gardens and European art, with sweeping views over the city. Its sister site, the Getty Villa in Malibu, focuses on ancient Greek and Roman art.

Santa Monica and Venice. Walk or cycle the beach path between the Santa Monica Pier and the Venice Boardwalk, with its skaters, street performers and canals a few blocks inland.

Downtown LA. See the Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Broad contemporary art museum, Grand Central Market and the historic Olvera Street.

Theme parks. Universal Studios Hollywood is within the city, and Disneyland is in Anaheim, about an hour's drive south depending on traffic.

Malibu and the Pacific Coast Highway. A coastal drive north to beaches such as El Matador and Zuma.

Eating in LA

LA's food reputation rests on its immigrant communities. Try tacos from street stands and trucks, especially al pastor and fish tacos, plus Korean barbecue in Koreatown, Thai food in Thai Town, and dim sum in the San Gabriel Valley. Classic local institutions include In-N-Out burgers and the French dip sandwich. Farmers' markets, including the Original Farmers Market at Fairfax, are good for casual grazing. Vegetarian and vegan options are among the best in the US.

Getting There and Around

Most visitors arrive at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Smaller airports at Burbank, Long Beach and Ontario can be more convenient for some neighbourhoods. LAX is connected to the Metro rail network via a shuttle and transit centre, and ride-hailing pick-ups are from a dedicated area.

A car makes LA easier, but traffic is heavy and parking can be expensive. The Metro rail lines link Downtown, Hollywood, Santa Monica, Pasadena and Long Beach, and buses fill the gaps. Ride-hailing apps are widely used. Many visitors combine transit with ride-hailing rather than renting a car for every day.
