Sydney is built around one of the world's most beautiful harbours. Ferries crisscross the water between golden beaches and bushland headlands, the Opera House glows white against the blue, and the Harbour Bridge frames it all. Australia's largest city is outdoorsy, sunny and laid-back, with a cosmopolitan food scene and easy escapes to national parks and mountains.
Seasons are the reverse of Europe and North America.
Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) are many people's favourite, with warm days, comfortable evenings and fewer crowds.
Summer (December to February) is beach season, hot and sometimes humid, with the famous New Year's Eve fireworks over the harbour. It is also school holiday time, so prices and crowds peak.
Winter (June to August) is mild and sunny, rarely cold by northern standards. It is quieter and good value, and humpback whales migrate along the coast, often from around May to November.
Always swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches, as rip currents can be strong.
The Blue Mountains, with the Three Sisters rock formation and bushwalks, are about two hours west by train or road. The Hunter Valley wine region, Royal National Park and the Palm Beach northern beaches are also popular.
Sydney is a brunch and coffee city; try a flat white and smashed avocado on toast. Fish markets serve fresh seafood, and pubs do classic meat pies and chicken parmigiana. Australian desserts include the pavlova and lamingtons, and Vegemite on toast is a local rite of passage. Thanks to large Asian communities, Chinatown, Haymarket, Cabramatta and Harris Park are excellent for Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese and Indian food. Vegetarian and vegan dining is very well established.
Sydney Airport is close to the centre. Airport Link trains reach Central and the CBD quickly; taxis, ride-hailing and buses are also available.
The public transport network includes trains, metro, light rail, buses and ferries. Tap on and off with an Opal card or a contactless bank card, and benefit from daily and weekly fare caps. Ferries are scenic and practical, and the centre is walkable.
