Auckland Travel Guide

Auckland is New Zealand's largest city, spread across an isthmus between two harbours and dotted with dozens of dormant volcanic cones. Locals call it the City of Sails, and with good reason: the Hauraki Gulf, its islands and sheltered bays are never far away. It is the main international gateway to the country, and a few days here offer beaches, vineyards, Māori and Pacific culture and easy island escapes.

Key Facts

When to Travel

Auckland has a mild, maritime climate, and showers can arrive in any season.

Experiences Not to Miss

Sky Tower. The tallest freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere, with observation decks and, for the bold, the SkyWalk and SkyJump.

Waitematā Harbour and the Viaduct. Restaurants and bars along the waterfront, with ferries leaving from the downtown terminal. Sailing trips on the harbour are a classic Auckland experience.

Auckland War Memorial Museum. In the Domain park, with outstanding Māori and Pacific collections and daily cultural performances.

Volcanic cones. Climb Maungawhau / Mount Eden or Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill for panoramic city views.

Waiheke Island. About forty minutes by ferry, known for vineyards, olive groves, art galleries and beaches.

Rangitoto Island. The youngest volcano in the gulf, with a walking track through lava fields to the summit crater.

Devonport. A charming Victorian seaside suburb a short ferry ride across the harbour, with views back to the city.

West Coast beaches. Piha and Karekare are wild black-sand surf beaches beside the Waitākere Ranges rainforest. Surf conditions can be dangerous, so swim only between the flags.

Further Afield

Many travellers continue to Rotorua for geothermal parks and Māori culture, Waitomo for its glow-worm caves, Hobbiton near Matamata, or north to the Bay of Islands.

Food and Drink

Auckland's dining reflects its Pacific, Asian and European communities. Try fresh green-lipped mussels, fish and chips by the water, and a Kiwi meat pie. A hāngī, Māori food cooked in an earth oven, is often part of cultural experiences. Dominion Road is known for Chinese food, and Sandringham and Papatoetoe for Indian food. Don't miss pavlova, hokey pokey ice cream and a flat white, which New Zealanders also claim as their invention.

Getting There and Around

Auckland Airport is south of the city. The SkyDrive express bus and public bus and train connections run to the centre, and taxis and ride-hailing are available. Allow time for traffic at peak hours.

Within the city, use an AT HOP card or contactless payment on buses, trains and ferries. Ferries to Devonport, Waiheke and other islands leave from downtown. The city centre is walkable, but a car is useful for the west coast beaches and wider region.
