Orlando, in central Florida, is the theme-park capital of the world. Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort and SeaWorld draw families, thrill-seekers and fans from every continent. But the area also has natural springs, lakes, a lively food scene and the Kennedy Space Center within driving distance. Planning matters here more than almost anywhere: the parks are vast, ticket options are complex and the summer heat is intense.
Crowds, prices and weather all vary through the year. Late January to early March (outside holiday weekends) and late April to May are often good balances of manageable crowds and pleasant weather. Summer (June–August) is hot, humid and busy with school holidays, with afternoon thunderstorms almost daily; this is also the start of hurricane season, which officially runs from June to November. Autumn brings Halloween and food-and-wine events, and Christmas to New Year is among the busiest periods of the year.
Magic Kingdom is the classic Disney park with Cinderella Castle, parades and fireworks; it is the best choice for young children. EPCOT combines futuristic rides with World Showcase, where pavilions represent different countries' food and culture. Hollywood Studios focuses on films, with Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge and Toy Story Land. Animal Kingdom mixes a safari ride with the Pandora area inspired by Avatar.
At Universal, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is split between two parks, connected by the Hogwarts Express (which requires a park-to-park ticket). Epic Universe added new themed worlds. SeaWorld Orlando offers roller coasters alongside marine-life exhibits, and LEGOLAND Florida in nearby Winter Haven suits younger children.
Theme-park food ranges from quick-service burgers to themed fine dining. Outside the parks, International Drive and Dr Phillips' "Restaurant Row" have chain and upscale restaurants, while Mills 50 is known for Vietnamese and other Asian food. Florida specialities include Key lime pie, Cuban sandwiches and fresh Gulf seafood. Vegetarian, vegan and allergy-friendly options are widely available, especially in Disney parks, where chefs can often accommodate requests.
Orlando International Airport (MCO) is one of the busiest in the US, with many domestic and international flights. Orlando Sanford (SFB) serves some low-cost and charter carriers. Brightline high-speed trains link MCO with Miami and Fort Lauderdale.
A rental car gives the most flexibility, but factor in parking fees at the parks and hotels. Disney runs free buses, monorails, boats and the Skyliner gondola between its resorts and parks for resort guests. Universal hotels offer shuttles or walking paths. Ride-hailing apps are widely used, and I-Ride Trolley runs along International Drive.
