Vienna wears its imperial past with elegance. For centuries the Habsburgs ruled a vast empire from here, and they left behind grand palaces, the Ringstrasse boulevard lined with monumental buildings, and some of the world's richest art collections. The city also shaped Western music: Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Schubert and the Strauss family all worked here, and opera and classical concerts remain part of everyday cultural life. Add the famous coffee houses, a thriving wine scene within the city limits and excellent public transport, and it is easy to see why Vienna regularly ranks among the most liveable cities in the world.
Spring (April–May) brings blossoming parks and the start of outdoor café season. Summer (June–August) is warm, with open-air film festivals in front of the City Hall, the Danube Island Festival and swimming in the Old Danube; note that the State Opera and Vienna Boys' Choir take summer breaks. Autumn (September–October) is harvest time in the vineyards, with new wine served in the Heurigen taverns. Winter (November–February) is cold but magical, with Christmas markets from mid-November, the ball season in January and February, and cosy coffee-house afternoons.
Start with a Wiener Schnitzel, a thin breaded veal cutlet, often served with potato salad. Try Tafelspitz (boiled beef with horseradish and apple sauce), goulash, and for vegetarians Käsespätzle (cheese noodles) and Kaiserschmarrn, a fluffy shredded pancake with plum compote. Coffee-house culture is listed as intangible cultural heritage: order a Melange and a slice of Sachertorte or apple strudel, and linger as long as you like. At a Würstelstand sausage stall, locals grab a late-night snack. The Naschmarkt has many international options, including Indian and Middle Eastern food.
Vienna International Airport (VIE) is linked to the centre by the City Airport Train (CAT), the cheaper S-Bahn and buses. Vienna Hauptbahnhof is a major rail hub, with trains to Prague, Budapest, Salzburg, Munich and night trains across Europe.
Vienna's U-Bahn, trams and buses are efficient, clean and run late, with 24-hour metro service on weekend nights. Day and multi-day passes are good value. The historic centre inside the Ring is compact and walkable, and the Ring tram routes provide a ready-made sightseeing loop. City bikes are available for short trips.
