Prague Travel Guide

The City of a Hundred Spires

Prague escaped most of the destruction of the twentieth century, so its Gothic churches, baroque palaces and Art Nouveau facades survive in remarkable completeness. The Vltava River curves through the city, crossed by the statue-lined Charles Bridge, with the castle complex watching from the hill above. Beyond the fairy-tale centre, the Czech capital has a lively café culture, beer halls that have been pouring for centuries and leafy residential districts where locals actually live. It is compact, walkable and still good value compared with many Western European capitals.

When to Visit

Top Attractions

  1. Charles Bridge – The fourteenth-century stone bridge lined with baroque statues. Cross at dawn for photos without the crowds.
  2. Prague Castle – One of the largest castle complexes in the world, including St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace and the tiny houses of Golden Lane.
  3. Old Town Square – Gothic Týn Church, pastel facades and the Astronomical Clock, whose mechanical figures perform on the hour.
  4. Jewish Quarter (Josefov) – Historic synagogues and the atmospheric Old Jewish Cemetery, managed by the Jewish Museum in Prague.
  5. Malá Strana (Lesser Town) – Baroque lanes below the castle, the Church of St Nicholas and the Wallenstein Garden.
  6. Petřín Hill – Gardens, an observation tower and a funicular, with views over the red rooftops.
  7. Vyšehrad – A quieter hilltop fortress with a basilica, a cemetery where famous Czechs are buried and river views.
  8. Day trips – Kutná Hora with its bone chapel, Český Krumlov's medieval old town, or Karlštejn Castle.

Food and Drink

Czech cuisine is hearty: try svíčková (beef in creamy vegetable sauce with dumplings), guláš, roast pork with dumplings and sauerkraut, smažený sýr (fried cheese, a vegetarian favourite) and bramboráky (potato pancakes). Trdelník, the chimney cake sold in the Old Town, is more tourist snack than tradition; for dessert look for koláče pastries or větrník. The Czechs are among the world's biggest beer drinkers, and traditional pubs pour excellent Pilsner-style lagers. Vegetarian options have grown, and many modern bistros offer meat-free menus.

Getting There and Around

Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG) is connected to the city by buses linking to the metro and by the Airport Express bus to the main train station. Trains run to Vienna, Berlin, Munich, Budapest and Kraków.

Prague's trams, metro and buses are frequent and integrated under one ticket system. Buy tickets from machines, the PID Lítačka app or with contactless cards on many vehicles, and validate paper tickets before boarding. The centre is very walkable, though the castle district involves a climb; tram 22 is a scenic way up.
