Jakarta is Indonesia's sprawling capital and Southeast Asia's largest metropolitan area, a place of gleaming malls, traffic-filled toll roads and leafy colonial-era neighbourhoods. It is rarely anyone's dream destination at first glance, yet it rewards curiosity: the Dutch-built old town of Kota Tua, vibrant markets, one of the largest mosques in Asia facing a neo-Gothic cathedral, and some of the best food in the archipelago. It is also the gateway to the Thousand Islands, Bandung's highlands and onward flights across Indonesia's many islands.
Jakarta is hot and humid all year. The dry season (roughly May–September) is the best time to visit, with fewer heavy downpours. The wet season (roughly November–March) brings intense rain, and January and February can see flooding in parts of the city that disrupts traffic. During Ramadan, many restaurants are quieter by day and lively after sunset, and the Eid al-Fitr holiday (Lebaran) sees a mass exodus from the city, making the capital unusually calm but transport out of it very busy.
Indonesian food is varied and often spicy. Try nasi goreng, satay with peanut sauce, soto Betawi (a rich local beef soup), gado-gado (vegetables with peanut sauce, a good vegetarian choice), kerak telor (a Betawi egg-and-rice snack sold around Monas and Kota Tua), rendang at Padang restaurants and martabak sweet or savoury pancakes at night. Street stalls and food courts in malls are inexpensive, and Menteng and Senopati have stylish cafés. Indian restaurants are found in central and southern business areas.
Soekarno–Hatta International Airport (CGK) is Jakarta's main airport, connected by the airport train to the city centre, by DAMRI buses and taxis. Halim Perdanakusuma (HLP) serves some domestic flights. The Whoosh high-speed train links Jakarta with Bandung.
Traffic is notorious, so plan around rush hours. The TransJakarta bus rapid transit system, the MRT north–south line, the LRT and KRL commuter trains are the fastest ways to cross the city. Use a contactless card such as those issued by Indonesian banks for transit. App-based rides (Grab, Gojek), including motorbike taxis, are widely used and affordable; Bluebird taxis are reliable metered cabs.
