India's smallest state packs a lot into its coastline. Goa was a Portuguese territory for around four and a half centuries, and that history still shows in its whitewashed churches, pastel villas, Latin-quarter lanes and spicy vindaloo. Most visitors come for the beaches, which range from the busy party strips of the north to calm palm-fringed bays in the south, but inland Goa has spice plantations, waterfalls, wildlife sanctuaries and sleepy villages that reward exploration.
Choose based on the mood you want; distances between the two halves can mean long drives.
The main season runs from November to February, with dry, sunny days and calm seas. Christmas and New Year are the busiest and most expensive weeks, with big parties and events. March to May gets hot and humid, but it is quieter and cheaper. The monsoon (June–September) transforms Goa into a lush green landscape with spectacular waterfalls; many beach shacks close, swimming in the sea is unsafe and water sports are suspended, but hotels offer deep discounts. October is the shoulder month as businesses reopen.
Beaches. Beyond the famous strips, look for smaller coves such as Butterfly Beach near Palolem (reached by boat or trail), Cola Beach with its lagoon, and Querim at the state's northern tip.
Old Goa. The UNESCO-listed churches and convents of Old Goa include the Basilica of Bom Jesus, which holds the remains of St Francis Xavier, and the vast Sé Cathedral.
Panjim (Panaji). Goa's capital is a pleasant riverside city. Wander through Fontainhas, the Latin Quarter, with its colourful houses and azulejo tiles, and see the striking white Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church.
Forts. Aguada Fort, with its lighthouse, and Chapora Fort, with views over Vagator, are good for sunsets.
Nature. Dudhsagar Falls on the Goa–Karnataka border is most dramatic after the monsoon; access is by jeep from Collem and depends on the season and local rules. Spice plantations near Ponda offer tours and lunch. Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary and Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary protect forested hills. Dolphin-spotting boat trips leave from several beaches.
Markets and nightlife. The Anjuna Wednesday flea market and the Arpora Saturday night market are popular in season. Beach clubs and live-music venues cluster in the north.
Goan cuisine blends Konkan and Portuguese influences. Try a Goan fish curry with rice, the state's everyday staple, prawn balchão, chicken cafreal, pork vindaloo and sorpotel, and xacuti, a richly spiced coconut curry. Vegetarians can enjoy Goan Saraswat thalis, khatkhate (mixed vegetable stew) and bhaji-pav for breakfast. Bakeries sell poi bread and bebinca, a layered coconut dessert. Local feni, distilled from cashew or coconut, is distinctive.
Goa has two airports: Dabolim (GOI) near Vasco da Gama and the newer Manohar International Airport (GOX) at Mopa in the north. Check which one your flight uses, as they are far apart. The Konkan Railway links Goa with Mumbai, Mangaluru and beyond, stopping at Thivim, Karmali and Madgaon. Long-distance buses run from Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
There is limited public transport, so most visitors rent a scooter (carry a valid licence and wear a helmet), hire a taxi, or use the state-backed app-based taxi services. Local buses connect towns cheaply. Pilot motorcycle taxis are a Goan tradition for short hops.
