Athens is where Western democracy, philosophy and theatre took shape, and the Acropolis still towers over the city as a reminder. But modern Athens is no open-air museum. It is a sprawling, energetic, sometimes gritty capital with excellent food, a thriving street-art scene, rooftop bars facing the Parthenon and neighbourhoods that come alive after dark. Many travellers treat it as a quick stop before the islands; those who give it two or three days usually wish they had stayed longer.
April to June and September to October offer warm, sunny weather that is comfortable for climbing hills and exploring ruins. July and August are very hot, and heat waves can lead to midday closures at archaeological sites; plan visits for early morning. Many Athenians head to the islands in August, so the city feels quieter. November to March is mild and rainier, with short queues at the Acropolis and lower hotel rates, though some island ferries reduce their schedules.
Greek food in Athens ranges from cheap street snacks to inventive modern tavernas. Try souvlaki and gyros wrapped in pita, spanakopita (spinach pie), moussaka, horiatiki (Greek salad), fava (yellow split-pea purée) and gemista (stuffed tomatoes and peppers). For dessert, sample loukoumades (honey doughnuts) and Greek yoghurt with honey. Vegetarians have many options because of the Orthodox fasting tradition. The Central Market (Varvakios Agora) and neighbourhoods like Koukaki, Psyrri and Pangrati have excellent tavernas.
Athens International Airport (ATH), Eleftherios Venizelos, is linked to the centre by Metro Line 3, the suburban railway and express buses. Piraeus, the main port for island ferries, is connected by Metro Line 1 and tram; Rafina and Lavrio serve some Cyclades routes.
The centre is compact and walkable, and the metro is clean and efficient, with ancient finds displayed in stations such as Syntagma and Acropolis. Trams run to the coast. Taxis are yellow and reasonably priced; apps help avoid disputes.
