Agra Travel Guide

Overview

Agra, on the banks of the Yamuna River in Uttar Pradesh, was one of the great capitals of the Mughal Empire, and it holds three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and, nearby, Fatehpur Sikri. Many visitors rush through on a day trip from Delhi, but staying a night lets you see the Taj at sunrise, explore the quieter Mughal tombs across the river and taste the city's famous sweets. Agra forms one corner of India's popular "Golden Triangle" with Delhi and Jaipur.

When to Visit

October to March is the best time. Days are pleasant and dry, though December and January mornings can be foggy, sometimes hiding the Taj until late morning and delaying trains. April to June is extremely hot, so plan sightseeing for dawn and late afternoon. The monsoon (July–September) brings humidity and showers but greener gardens and fewer crowds. Weekends and Indian public holidays are the busiest times at the Taj.

The Big Three

Taj Mahal

Built by the emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, the white marble mausoleum is famous for its symmetry, inlaid semi-precious stones and the way its colour shifts with the light. Arrive at opening time for the softest light and thinner crowds. The monument is closed to general visitors on Fridays. Security is strict: only small items are allowed inside, and food, tobacco and many electronics are prohibited, so check the official Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) rules before you go. Night viewing is offered on certain dates around the full moon with limited tickets.

Agra Fort

This red sandstone fortress-palace was the main residence of the Mughal emperors for generations. Inside are audience halls, mosques and marble pavilions, including the octagonal tower from which, according to tradition, Shah Jahan gazed at the Taj during his final years.

Fatehpur Sikri

About an hour's drive away, Emperor Akbar's short-lived capital is a remarkably intact city of palaces, courtyards and the vast Jama Masjid, entered through the towering Buland Darwaza. The shrine of the Sufi saint Salim Chishti inside the mosque complex draws pilgrims from all faiths.

Food in Agra

Agra is synonymous with petha, a translucent sweet made from ash gourd, sold in countless flavours. Breakfast like a local with bedai and jalebi, spicy lentil-stuffed puris with potato curry. Mughlai dishes such as kebabs, biryani and rich kormas reflect the city's history, and dalmoth, a spicy fried snack, is a good souvenir. Stick to busy, well-reviewed places and drink bottled water.

Getting There and Around

Most travellers come by train or road from Delhi. Express trains such as the Gatimaan Express and Vande Bharat services connect Delhi with Agra Cantt station in under two hours, and the Yamuna Expressway makes driving straightforward. Agra Airport (AGR) has limited domestic flights; most international visitors fly into Delhi.

Within Agra, auto-rickshaws, cycle-rickshaws, taxis and app-based cabs are all available. Battery-powered vehicles and golf carts shuttle visitors near the Taj, where fossil-fuel vehicles are restricted to reduce pollution. Hiring a car and driver for the day is a convenient way to combine the Taj, the fort and Fatehpur Sikri.
